Over the years, probably also because his extensive experience as a rower, John had steered the journal over troubled waters generated by international controversies on infectious disease management and priorities. [...]John was extremely fair and often quoted Voltaire's “Don't let perfect be the enemy of good”, so he was aware that in many instances research could not be conducted in optimal conditions or with the best resources but that did not reduce its value. In the past days, as the news of John's death has spread, we have felt the warmth and support of the infectious disease community around us and that is giving us strength.
